How Can I Recognize an Anxiety Disorder?


There are five main forms of anxiety disorders: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD), Phobias, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).


Despite these identifying characteristics, people with anxiety disorders typically do not appear to the untrained eye to have major psychiatric problems. For example, an individual with a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) may appear to be simply a worrywart. Often the individual is totally oblivious to the fact that he has a diagnosable psychiatric condition that can be treated. The afflicted person may say, “I always thought I was just a worrier. I’d feel keyed up and unable to relax. At times it would come and go, and other times it would be constant. It could go on for days. I’d worry about what I was going to fix for a dinner party, or what would be a great present for somebody. I just couldn’t let something go . . . sometimes I’d feel a little lightheaded. My heart would race or pound. And that would make me worry more.”
